Discord anti-spam compared: AutoMod, filters, verification and honeypots

There are four main ways to keep spam out of a Discord server, and each one catches something the others miss. Here's what each does well, where it falls short, and the combination that covers the most.

At a glance

ApproachGood atMissesFalse alarms
Discord AutoModKnown bad words, mention spam, obvious spam contentNew wording and new scam domainsSome, depending on your word lists
Filter and rate-limit botsFloods, link and invite spam, message burstsSlow or well-disguised spamCan hit chatty members; needs tuning
Verification gatesThrowaway bot accounts at the doorCompromised accounts that are already membersNone in chat, but adds a step for new members
Honeypot trapsCompromised accounts run by scripts, whatever they postScripts that skip the trap channelVery few: only members who ignore the warning

Discord AutoMod

AutoMod is built into Discord, free, and runs before a message is even posted. It can block custom words and phrases, commonly flagged words, mention spam and content Discord suspects is spam, and alert your moderators or time the member out.

Where it falls short: it judges what a message says. Scam messages change their wording and their domains constantly, so a word list is always catching up. And a compromised account that writes something new passes straight through.

Use it for: mention spam, slurs, and the phrases and links that keep coming back in your community.

Filter and rate-limit bots

Many moderation bots add filters on top of AutoMod: limits on how many messages, links, mentions or emoji a member can post in a few seconds, invite-link blocking, and lists of known scam domains.

Where they fall short: the limits are a trade-off. Set them low and they catch excited members in a busy chat; set them high and slower spam gets through. Domain lists only know the domains someone has already reported.

Use them for: floods and raids in very active servers, where message speed itself is the problem.

Verification gates

Discord's verification level (for example, Medium: the account must be older than 5 minutes) and captcha or role-gate bots stop throwaway accounts from posting the moment they join.

Where they fall short: they only check people at the door. A member who passed verification a year ago and then gets compromised is already inside, with all their roles.

Use them for: raids of fresh bot accounts. Every server should have the verification level at least at Medium.

Honeypot traps

A honeypot is a channel everyone is told never to post in. People stay out; spam scripts post in every channel they can reach, so they post there too, and a bot removes them at once. It doesn't look at the words, the links or the account's age, only at behaviour that people don't have. Read what a honeypot channel is.

Where it falls short: a script that skips the trap channel isn't caught. Keeping the trap at the top of the channel list makes that rare, and duplicate-message detection (the same message in several channels within seconds) covers most of the rest.

Use it for: compromised accounts, which are the main source of scam links on Discord today.

The combination that covers the most

  1. Verification level Medium or higher, and 2FA required for moderator actions.
  2. AutoMod with the spam and mention-spam rules on, plus your own word list.
  3. A honeypot trap at the top of the channel list, with duplicate-message detection.
  4. Raid alerts, so a wave of new accounts or DM spam reaches your moderators straight away.

Stingsby covers the last two and checks the first one: /security scan reviews your verification level, 2FA and risky permissions and tells you what to fix. See how to set it up, or read how to stop compromised accounts spamming scam links.

Stingsby is a free Discord bot that sets the honeypot trap for you, catches the same message pasted across channels, and alerts your staff to raids. It's in early access: ask for it in the support server, or read the setup guide first.
